The Royal Opera House Cafe, tucked on Bow Street just steps from Covent Garden’s bustle, serves up a relaxed yet culturally rich environment for a midday pause or an early evening drink. As a cafe, it strikes a balance between casual convenience and a connection to the performing arts world, reflected in the backstage photos lining the walls that catch the eye of visitors fresh from tours or shows.

Locals and visitors alike seem drawn to its rooftop, where outdoor seating offers sweeping views across Covent Garden, especially appealing on sunnier days or clear evenings. This elevated perch creates a quiet refuge from the busy streets below while maintaining a lively social buzz that’s particularly noticeable on weekend evenings. It’s a spot where groups gather for casual drinks, couples linger over coffee, and theatre goers make a stop before or after a matinee.

On the menu, the offerings lean towards comforting yet thoughtfully prepared options. Coffee fans will appreciate a solid Long Black alongside a selection of light bites like egg mayo sandwiches and pumpkin soup—simple, well-executed choices that suit this cafe’s unpretentious mood. Those with a sweet tooth often find themselves drawn to the pistachio cake, a local favorite that pairs well with the coffee.

Service here might feel a bit rushed during peak times, as the staff juggle the steady flow of theatre crowds and café visitors, but their professionalism is clear. The atmosphere blends a hint of backstage charm with a practical café rhythm, making it an ideal place to catch your breath after a stroll through historic Covent Garden or to settle in with a warming drink before heading to a performance.

In summary, the Royal Opera House Cafe is best for those seeking a quiet corner with a view in a setting touched by London’s theatrical heart. It works well for solo visitors looking to enjoy a good coffee and pastry, friends meeting for a casual drink, or theatre enthusiasts pausing between acts. Midday through early evening, especially on weekends, appears to be the prime time to soak up the combination of relaxed charm and urban energy.

Service was manic and not well organised but the food and coffee were lovely. Staff very professional. I enjoyed looking at the backstage photos as I had just been on the tour.

Great little spot with views of Covent Garden. Drinks were reasonable, we didn’t eat, so not sure about the food. Lively atmosphere on a Sunday evening. Staff very good.

We decided to stop by for drinks on the rooftop and were immediately asking ourselves why we hadn't considered this gem for a casual drink before. The lush view overlooking the rest of Covent Garden was captivating, and the overall atmosphere of the venue exuded a lovely charm. We're already planning our return in the summer without a doubt.

The best salad I have ever had!!! Highly recommend for people who love salad, on a diet or vegans. It tastes really good and has reasonable price! Mix and match for two salads only 6.5 pounds!

A truly fabulous place for lunch. Tasty food, fantastic service, spacious and quiet too! It was just perfect after some browsing in Covent Garden and before our afternoon matinee.
